Internal Medicine Residents interested in Endocrinology fellowship positions for physician-scientists

We have one fellowship position available outside the NRMP match for a resident in a physician-scientist training program (PSTP) who intends to build a research career in metabolism.

What the position is. A position in the Holman Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at NYU Langone Health, with the research years spent in this laboratory. The structure is two clinical years followed by two protected research years, and candidates in an ABIM research pathway may be able to shorten the clinical training accordingly. I am the division director and the research mentor, which means the clinical schedule and the research plan are set by the same person and do not compete with each other. That is not true at most places and it is the single biggest reason fellows lose research time.

What you would work on. The lab studies how tumors and diet reprogram whole-body metabolism. Our current program spans tumor-secreted factors that drive cachexia, hepatic metabolic reprogramming, insulin signaling in various tumors and organs, and dietary fructose in cancer and intestinal physiology. We run a dedicated cachexia and unintentional weight loss clinic, a prospective patient cohort with banked samples and paired imaging, and interventional trials, alongside mouse physiology. A fellow can work at any point on that line, from mechanism in mice to a clinical trial, and most work at more than one.

The endpoint. The purpose of these three years is a funded K-award and a faculty position. We plan backward from that: a defined project in the first months of research time, first-author publication, a K08 or K23 submitted before the end of fellowship, and a mentorship committee assembled early. I have taken this route myself and I will tell you honestly what it costs.

Who I am looking for. A resident in a PSTP or research-pathway program with long history of prior research training, ideally a PhD, at least one first-author paper, and a clear reason for choosing metabolism. I care more about whether you can drive a question than about which techniques you already know.
