Clinical research fellows (T32-supported)

I take clinical fellows on two-year research blocks, including candidates supported by an institutional T32. Fellows from endocrinology, cardiology, hematology-oncology, and pulmonary or critical care are all a good fit for this work.

The premise. Two years is enough time to do one thing well and finish it. It is not enough time to build a new mouse model from scratch. Projects for clinical fellows are therefore scoped to our existing infrastructure: our prospective cachexia cohorts with banked serum and paired imaging, our clinical trial portfolio, and our retrospective body composition datasets.

What a fellow leaves with. A first-author paper submitted before the end of the block, and usually a second in progress. A completed K-award or foundation application, drafted during year two with protected time to write it. Enough preliminary data to make that application competitive. Prior fellows in this lab have published on fibrate use and muscle preservation in NSCLC, body composition changes under androgen deprivation therapy, and the management of PI3K inhibitor-associated hyperglycemia, and have gone on to faculty positions and subspecialty fellowships.

What I ask. That you have a clinical question you care about, and that you accept a narrow one. The most common way a fellowship year is lost is a project that grows. We define aims and an analysis plan in the first eight weeks and I hold you to them. Expect weekly one-on-one meetings during year one.

Fellows in this lab can also see patients in our cachexia and unintentional weight loss clinic, which is one of the few dedicated programs of its kind. If your interest is clinical rather than translational, that is a legitimate path here and we will build the project around it.
